A semi aggressive fish that does not always play well with others, reaching 20-25 cm (7.9-9.8").
Like most cichlids, is considered "aggressive", but can get along in a well-populated tank such as with larger Barbs or Oscars tending to be more territorial if kept with only a few other fish, therefore allowed to easily establish and defend a "territory" in the tank. Jack Dempsey cichlids can often appear shy, and should be provided with plenty of places to hide.
Feed once or twice a day. Naturally a carnivorous fish that will take high-quality Cichlid pellets, bloodworm, brine shrimp, crickets, earthworms and other live or frozen foods.
Tanks should be spacious and well filtered with dark shady areas should be provided with plenty of plants, bogwood, and caves. Java moss covered coconut shells or clean new flowerpots make a great hideaway. Prefers a slow current with soft substrate to dig in. Very tolerant of water temperatures with 22 -30 °C (71.6-86°F) being ideal.
